Biotopical Fish Keeping

Biotopical fish keeping is not a widely known concept however it is becoming more and more popular.  Biotopical fish keeping means simulating the fish’s natural environment and keeping species that would naturally be alongside each other.  This method of fish keeping eliminates many problems that amateur fish keepers encounter.  Generally beginners have problems deciding what types of fish and what types of aqua-scaping (décor) to have in their aquarium.  It makes these choices easier if you have a plan to follow.  If it is a biotopical one then your aquarium is guaranteed to be successful!

The leading expert in the biotopical field is Heiko Belher; he continuously investigates individual biotopes which he then re-creates for fish enthusiasts to copy in their home aquaria. There are many benefits to this type of fish keeping, they include; better colouration of fish, no incompatibility issues and better breeding success. It is possible in all types of aquarium; however it is very important that you do your research and decide what you want your tank to finally look like. It is even possible to re-create a scene that you have experienced on holiday. The only limiting factors that you will encounter are space, money and natural predators. Of course in your tank you would only want to concentrate on mixing species that are not natural food for each other. Otherwise this could present you with some problems!

A biotopical tank within your home can be a very interesting feature, not only is it a part of nature beautifully re-created for all to see, but it can act as a tool for teaching children about individual habitats that are under threat. You see many endangered species in the zoo, but where do you see populations of fish in their natural surroundings that are under threat? They are just as fascinating, but maybe not as widely thought about by the public.
You have so many different habitats and fish to choose from. For example you could set up an aquarium containing mangrove roots with brackish species such as Archer fish, Mono, Scats, Anableps and Puffers. Or you could re-create part of the Brazilian River, encompassing Apistogrammas, Freshwater Shrimps and hundreds of species of Catfish. The choice is yours; the only limit is your imagination. Here at Amwell Aquatics we are passionate about the optimal keeping of your fishy friends, so if we can help you in anyway please do contact us.
